ENJOY THE GIFT
Published: 21/12/2011 - Filed under: Editor's Note »
Well, if there is to be a downturn in 2012, bring it on.
As we heard an airline executive say wryly during a recent year-end thank you press party: “I don’t remember when a year wasn’t challenging.” In fact, the first time we heard that buzzword was in the late 90s (circa ’98), and it’s been intoned without fail ever since.
And yet, here is our travel and hospitality industry, perhaps, in varying degrees of being battered, but certainly not unbowed and determined to get business travellers to where they need to go in the quickest time and most comfortable environment possible. And when they get to their destination, stay in what features the comforts of home and more.
It’s amazing how, despite the doom and gloom predictions, airlines keep announcing imminent arrivals of Airbus A380s, Dreamliners and other next-generation aircraft. As for hotel chains, we’ve just completely lost track of which cities (mostly in China and India, of course), their new properties are going to pop up in.
Tough times are no longer a phenomenon, a fluke of life. Obviously, we’ve learned to accept that and adapt through aggressive strategies of creativity and consolidation as well as long-term investment. How a sense of survival keeps us evolving!
Again, we are given 12 new months to write fresh chapters in our growth as professionals and human beings. It’s a precious opportunity that shouldn’t be squandered with moaning about (continuing) hard times, staying stagnant in business practices or keeping a low profile.
Enjoy the gift and benefit from it.
From me and the Panacea Publishing Asia team, joyful festive wishes and a productive and healthy 2012!
