THE WEALTH OF HEALTH
Published: 08/02/2012 - Filed under: Editor's Note »
Hearing one’s heart beating amplified through the magic of state-of-the-art medical technology is - for lack of a better word - awesome.
Through a procedure, known as an echocardiogram, where sound waves are projected into that dynamic organ and recorded by an ultrasound machine as it sends vibrations back (thus, the reference to “echo”), the doc will be able to tell you after reading the images the current condition of your heart as it absorbs and sends lifeblood into the system, enabling another go at existence. When I first heard the regular (thank goodness) whoosh and whish of the pumping process, lying in that cool and darkened treatment room with the technician expertly passing her wand over my chest, sides and lower throat, I was incredulous that those gentle noises spelled the fact I was still very much earthbound.
In fact, my executive check up at Manila’s world-class St Luke’s Medical Center, Global City a week ago provided me many moments to be grateful that I was still managing to function at the rate I am able to, given the punishing travel schedules, irregular meal times, inadequate sleep and yes, stop-start attempts at exercise. If that benefit is part of your employee package, I strongly suggest you take advantage of it, and submit yourself yearly if you can because although it is a sobering experience, it is also an educational one.
As you come face to face with (and sometimes, as in the case of the echo session, hear) your own mortality, you really realise that health is wealth. Without it, you simply cannot operate at your best or reach the potential you were meant to achieve.
There are many more parts to you than just the heart, of course, and together they make up an intricate feat of engineering and design that continues to confound and dazzle the experts who painstakingly study the human body.
Take care of yourself. Respect yourself. Don’t let yourself down by abusing your physical gifts. Get healthy. If think you already are, please stay that way.
