AirAsia has been given the green light by the Malaysian government to operate direct flights between Penang and Chennai (formerly Madras) with a probable October start up.

The airline is currently working out the details of the service, including flight frequencies. AirAsia CEO Tony Fernandes said “it will take three to four months to finalise the details”. A daily flight is planned.

The news was announced as the fast-growing low-cost carrier launched a Singapore-Penang service on Monday.

Chennai, India’s fourth largest city, is often referred to as the “Detroit of India”, a reference to a large automotive manufacturing industry. For more on AirAsia, visit
