Air China to launch Shanghai-Chengdu-Mumbai route

As part of an effort to build its hub in southwestern Chinese city of Chengdu, Air China will start a Shanghai-Chengdu-Mumbai route on May 2.
Also the provincial capital of Sichuan, the city is noted as the gateway to western China, including the autonomous region of Tibet, where new business opportunities abound. Chengdu ranks fourth out of all Chinese cities in terms of permanent resident population, with more than 14 million people calling it home, after Chongqing, Shanghai and Beijing. Its airport is served by a host of domestic airlines as well as international carriers such as Dragonair, Eva Air, KLM, Thai Airways and ANA, connecting it to many cities in the country and international destinations, including Amsterdam, Hong Kong, New Delhi, London, New York, Paris, Seoul, Singapore, Tokyo and Vancouver.
The new service will make Mumbai the tenth city accessible by Air China from Chengdu, with four weekly flights numbered CA429/430 and serviced by an Airbus A319.
Chengdu, which has just wrapped up this year's Chinasoft, a technology trade show, has recently been named by its municipal government as the third "famous software city" in China, after Nanjing and Jinan.
