KT, a major Korean telecom service provider, will be providing Wi-Fi internet access on many of Seoul’s public transportation networks from this November.

KT, the sole distributor of Apple iPhones in the country, will begin by launching Wi-Fi service on metro subway lines 2, 3 and 8, as well as on airport limousines and inter-city buses after having previously run trials on several Seoul taxis.

By the end of September, KT plans to host Wi-Fi on all subway lines and create 600 Wi-Fi zones throughout the city’s 300 subways stations. Then at the year's end, the firm plans to develop 27,300 Wi-Fi zones around Seoul, including leisure and major business hubs.

KT users will enjoy the services free of charge, while other mobile network customers will have to pay a fee to access the internet.

Meanwhile, KT’s largest competitor, SK Telecom, has been developing Wi-Fi hotspots at subway stations in Busan, Gwangju, Daegju and Daejeon.
