"unusual for Virgin Atlantic to miss such a valuable marketing opportunity"

I am a former Gold card holder with VS, havent flown VS for a number of years (apart from one awful Washington run over a year ago).

If VS arent shouting about this, I cant see their current or former pax getting too excited.

I seriosuly wish it were different as VS once upon a time gave BA a run for their money - no longer though!

But it probably won't be a revolution; the need to get up from your seat in order to convert it into a bed is a key design flaw; it would be splendid if this was resolved.

Given the 34x family and the 33x family share the same cabin width, I think the improvements may be more than what we expect and I doubt they will stick with the same seat structure and use the NZ improved version.
Maybe we should expect something à la CX/US/AA or something innovative again.
Take a look at the captures from their website : http://dl.free.fr/mAjklo93K
Or see the website by yourself : http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/allaboutus/ourfleet/index.jsp?type=15

Enhancements:
-Bed is 9 inches longer
-Seat is 1.5 inches wider
-Screen is 12.1" (previously 10.4")
-IFE now has touch screen and LCD handset
-Power socket looks to use 3 pin plugs (without adapter) plus USB port
-New cocktail table, more ergonomic main table, reading light, better placed headphone jack
-New literature pocket and two ottoman spaces
-Aeromobile now installed for in-flight calls, messaging and data

Problems:
-Seat still uses karate chop fold mechanism
-Less privacy with semi-opaque walls
-Strange angle needed to see out of windows

In conclusion, it seems that the seat is still way ahead of BA but is a small rather than major improvement in the seat, but a big upgrade of the IFE. I have compared this new version to the Air NZ new one and they seem virtually the same but somehow the VS one is longer.

Anyone know why this is?

However, the claim may well become invalid because if I recall rightly, the new QR Biz beds are that length. Oh well, nice to airlines providing extra space for those valuable one percenters (height wise!).

What is the useable length? - something closer to 6 foot i would guess looking at the photos ...... unless you are 7 feet tall with only one leg and a foot that goes to a point. Reminds me a bit of BA claiming their beds were 6'6" long in the "z position" .......... which of course no one could ever work out ....... or use.

And i pity the poor so and so who gets what looks like seat 9A. His 7 foot long legs will be on the bar with someones backside in his face if someone is on the bar stool knocking back the cocktails and telling the world of his triumphs of his sales activities!

None of the seats look very private and the aisles look a bit narrow - expect to be hit several times when the tea trolley is squeaking up and down the aisles. It's a shame you still can't look out of the window.

I think I would still prefer a BA window seat on the upper deck - much more private and the added bonus of no pickies of SRB in the inflight magazine ;-)

-BA will not introduce a brand new seat on A380/787 aircraft, already announced that the seat will only be refreshed, so probably the same kind of things as VS
-The AA seat is indeed exciting, but mostly because AA biz seats are soooo underwhelming at present
-The AA seat will be the same as CX, and, interestingly, US Airways (another synergy?) though I understand AA are modifying their seat to make it more special, though some of the things CX did are absolutely amazing, just hope AA will follow suit
-The VS interiors look a bit LED-tastic so therefore tacky, but at least the purple leather has gone, the AA renderings on the other hand look quite tasteful, but can only comment when the metal appears on the Sao Paulo route in a couple of months
-In my view, the VS A333 is a bit like the BA 77Ws- rare, an improvement, good IFE, but still not quite good enough to be class leading

My views are always critical but I am glad that BA, VS and AA are all trying hard to improve.

"à chacun son goût "

I think you make three good points.

1. VS is a revamp not a breakthrough and I suspect you are right that BA will go the same way. It would be great if BA did not and tried to iinovate. I feel VS could have done more to be innovative here.

2. Whereas VS are rolling across the fleet, the AA new seat will originally only be on new 777-300 runnign DFW-GRU and DFW-LHR to begin with. As with all roll outs it takes time for a fleet to be converted. I am interested how long the VS roll out will take.

3. It does seem that airlines are converging, CX, AA and US inter alia have taken one route whilst Air Canada, Virgin, Air NZ and others have adopted a similar Herring bone option. UA have gone for two direction business seating like BA. Are we seeing a grouping in seat design, so there will be 2 or 3 styles which become the standards?

I agree with you it is good that they are all trying to improve, my hope is the focus is on improvement that adds value, as in longer beds, more comfort, more reliable IFE rather than more marketingspeak options like opaque windows, seocndary drinks tables and sexy club lighting...

I'm glad I don't travel VS, the cabin looks gaudy and I think I would wake up with a headache in it.

I'm also surprised that they have effectively introduced a version two of herringbone. It's not AFAIK a popular config and now there are already better products out there.

This is a refresh, not a game changer so all in all rather disappointing.

Have a look at their dedicated website for the NUC. It shows you the full workings of the seat.

I think the first review can charitably say is less than complimentary:

...."So, to sum up, whilst this is clearly a shiny new plane with everything in good working order, I am very disappointed with the hard product. It's cramped, poorly designed, and screams to me the fact that increased revenue through densification of passengers was the priority here. There are some minor improvements such as the glass holder, IFE, etc. and I do rather like the bar. But it pains me greatly to say that VS have taken a significant step backwards here. Give me the A zone on a noisy and battered old 744 any day over this."

People should know that VS strive to be a funky airline and for me, it works. I can see my self getting comfortable when the seat is turned to bed and I lean against the wall while watching my movie or reading my book!

I personally can't be bothered with VK's comment (je suis desole) as he only like BA's J and F, which for me is also narrow and embarrassingly cramped with 8-abreast seat in J ( Talking about AF 10 Abreast Y? Yes, i think BA J is more embarrassing!), that's a record low, don't you think VK? And what surprised me is that he failed to recognised that, not to mention when the partition is down and you are looking at the other passenger opposite you, sometimes it's weird! Also, no creativity in cabin LED lighting or even bar.

http://www.v-flyer.com/forum/index.php?t=274258&rb_v=viewtopic

I am actually a big fan of VS, their lounge on the ground is excellent.

But the hard product is a challenge; no window view, no decent recline when in seat mode (and that's still an issue here, apparently) and all the faff of getting up and switching to a bed if you are dozing off. This new iteration hasn't addressed any of those things, but I'm still looking forward to flying them (assuming VS's limited network actually flies places you want/need to go to).

I always find a review is a good starting point although everyones opinions on what is a good seat and flight experience varies enormously.
Virgins own description will of course be all positive, it would be rather stupid to think that if it had a problem they would point it out in their PR offerings.
It does seem that the seat may have a few disadvantages over the old although the fact it is new and so the cushioning will be lovely and bouncy is a big plus !
I am only an infrequent virgin flyer and am not sure it be coming to the HK route for a while. However I may fly to JFK just to see the blue space dust pudding

VS have now introduced 2 variants on the same aircraft with the centre seats being up to 6 inches shorter than the window seats. For me at 5'7" this makes little difference, but for Rich and the other 6 footers, it could.

As for the VS 380's. I cant imagine for one minute that VS will not introduce a "real" business class seat as oppose to the current vintage edition.

Not very impressed! I have contributed many comments to other discussion threads so why was this one deleted, just for linking to another of the Business Traveller reviews?

I have issue though with an airline not describing what the passenger is getting.

Details the seat lengths, both of them and if they are different, say centre seats are longer/shorter than side seats. Unless of course, an airline is trying to hide the facts from passengers.

I find it amazing that airlines can sell high end products and not deliver, by simply "tech" or someother excuse.

High time airlines described exactly what passengers are getting or there will be more pax like FDOS (hope I got that right) who march off flights after boarding.

I have issue though with an airline not describing what the passenger is getting."

I agree 100%! It's even a little much for them to claim 'up to' such-and-such legroom or bed length or whatever when they applies only to some seats and not all. Imagine an airline claiming that economy legroom was up to 36 inches when 36 inches was only available at the exit row, and it was 32 everywhere else!

The ABT review was the first to call this out for VS Upper Class DreamSuite (and kudos to them for being honest and brave enough to speak truth to PR power) - at http://www.ausbt.com.au/review-photo-gallery-virgin-atlantic-s-new-upper-class-dream-suite-business-class-seats-cabin the writer says "There are a few downsides to the new layout: the centre seats are markedly shorter than the window seats, by 16 centimetres -- just over six inches."

"That means that the advertised 7 feet, 3 inches bed is a bit of an advertising fib unless you're in a window seat."

" That 7'3" measurement is also from the very tip of the ottoman to the very point of the head space -- not all of which is usable space unless you have a very pointy head."

So here we have only HALF the seats in the UC-DS cabin, these being the window seats, having the proclaimed 7'3" bed length. That's not really good enough, VS.
